Movement

New paragraph

Why choose Strength in Movement?

Strength in Movement is simply that: The strength to move in order to reduce risk and perform every day activities, right through to maximising sports performance.

The movements have been developed from a base in Pilates, which I love and have adapted, as I've progressed my learning.

From GP referrals, lower back pain, optimal posture and breathing and recently applied movement neurology I have created a way of moving that can start from feeling like your in the worst condition to being able to give anything a go.

I am always amazed at how much our bodies can adapt, strengthen and heal through a mindful approach to movement.

The body achieves what the mind believes

" A significant  number of my clients have worked with me for many years. I love to see the development of their strength, confidence and well being and I feel grateful to be part of their fitness journey"

Lucy Lainton

Whatever your starting point, exercise is definitely for you.

You may feel scared about exercising if your mobility is compromised, you have chronic pain, your age, you're recovering from injury, lower back pain or you have just never exercised before and you are unsure of where to start.

You've come to the right place.

What ever your reason it is proven that exercise and movement is the BEST solution to creating a strong body and mind.

"Exercise is the miracle cure we have always had, but for too long we've neglected to take our recommended dose. Our health is suffering as a consequence"  NHS UK

Covid 19 has exposed a lack of exercise and vitamin D has massive implications on our health and so we need to take the time to help our bodies deal with disease.

How can our exercises help your body and mind?

Your life goal should be the ability to move well in your daily exercise and activities, reduce aches and pains while improving your core, strength and stamina.

You want to be able to create an environment of harmony between your mind and body, help reduce stress, quiet a restless mind, gain strength in your body as you focus on your breathing and exercise movements.

As you begin moving you will become more aware of your body, how it moves and more importantly begin to enjoy movement.

As you learn new and complex movements, you are building new neural connections in your brain. This will result in better memory and concentration and staving off certain illnesses. You will also increase oxygen and blood flow round your entire body which again can help fight off infections, increase energy levels, lower blood pressure and generally make you feel a whole lot better.

Once you start mastering the movements, starting with the foundation program, your body will move through all the ranges of movements, become more efficient and coordinated as you progress, with strength and grace.

I'm living with pain. How will it help me?

I started my UK business to help my mum who has lived with chronic back pain all her life. No amount of traction, pills or interventions helped and she wanted to avoid surgery at all costs. Fast-forward fifteen years and at 75 years old, my mum is one of my strongest clients and a great role model to others. She even climbed Mount Snowdon aged 72, with no ill effects!

My mum’s story is not the only one that has led to the development of the Foundation programme….and advancing the level of programmes for you to continue strengthening your movement patterns.

Courses

How did it start?

I was living in Australia teaching Reformer Pilates when I decided to come home to the UK to use my knowledge and skills to support my mum, who lived with chronic pain caused by muscular skeletal issues.

Once back in the UK, I furthered my education and established my business, which has steadily grown over the last fifteen years. I continue to be amazed by the body’s ability to heal through movement and by how the brain and body communicate through pain and restricted movement. My study of chronic pain and movement neurology has proved particularly beneficial when supporting clients, especially those with complex issues and those referred by GP's. My studies and experience of working with clients of different ages, abilities and needs has led to the development of my unique programme, which enables me to personalise support and effectively meet the individual needs of clients. A significant number of clients have worked with me for many years. I love to see the development of their strength, confidence and well being and I feel grateful to be a part of their fitness journey.

Whatever your start point, the Foundation programme will enable you to know your body and what you are capable of…..which is usually much more than you think!

"My husband and I have attended these classes twice a week for some years.

They are friendly, sociable, relaxed and fun.Yet,at the end of an hour, and hardly realising it we have had a deceptively comprehensive body workout.

Lucy adapts the workout to individual needs when appropriate.

Having recently had a health set back I definitely attribute a quicker recovery to the fitness level these classes have given me.

1OO% recommend Lucy.”

“I have been doing Pilates with Lucy for several years now. During lockdown it was a lifeline, joining her live several days a week.

You can go to classes or join live online classes or follow a recorded class when it suits you.

Pilates is challenging and very enjoyable. Lucy always gives several options so that no matter what stage you are at you can progress.

She is very knowledgeable, friendly and warm and makes you feel very welcome and comfortable.

You always feel amazing after a class and it really helps keep you strong which is important as you get a little older!!

I would highly recommend Lucy she’s great!

Over the last 40 years I have tried chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists but nothing has had such a positive impact upon my chronic back problems as Lucy’s Pilates. The strength, conditioning and advice has been invaluable. Whilst I will never be free from back problems, my rate of recovery, when the worst happens, is now vastly improved. I am also able to take part in other sporting activities which, prior to going to Lucy’s classes I had missed for 9 years.

I can’t speak highly enough of Pilates and particularly of Lucy who is a fabulous trainer and tailors the exercises to individuals needs and abilities.

All classes are relaxed, fun and non-judgmental.

I can’t recommend it highly enough.

“It’s been 10 years now that I’ve been attending Lucy’s classes. When I first attended I’d suffered a back injury and felt like it would never be normal again. Even in those first few weeks I saw massive improvements but since then I’ve experienced first hand what building a strong core can do for you. From even just standing at my desk all the way to running and cycling, everything feels easier and means I’m less prone to injury.

I can happily recommend any of Lucy’s classes to anyone of any ability as she can always find a way to make it challenging.”

I have a chronic, degenerative health condition which affects my mobility and causes pain. In 2011, I had spinal surgery and during my recovery a friend recommended Lucy’s classes.

I attended my first class in 2012, – frightened to move in case I hurt myself. Over the months and years I have developed my confidence, self esteem, strength, stamina, flexibility and mobility. For me, Lucy’s classes are fundamental to my physical and mental wellbeing. If I miss a few weeks, my pain increases and my mobility decreases.

Lucy is welcoming, encouraging and has the knowledge, skill and experience to provide an individual plan that will work for you – whatever your start point. She greets people individually at each class and asks about any health issues in order to adapt exercises appropriately for each person. Each movement is demonstrated with various levels of challenge so that everyone works to their own level. I like that I can work at a different level at each class depending upon how I feel physically and mentally. In every class, Lucy monitors every person’s technique and provides individual support as needed.

Give it a go! You will be glad you did.

I can't thank Lucy enough for the last 16 years keeping me sane and supple in equal measure, old age takes its toll if you don't stay active and consistently exercise in a regular structured and safe way, whilst my weekly classes with Lucy has ensured I can run around with the grandchildren and keep house and garden with no ill effects ,her classes are challenging but always great fun,and a wonderful way of meeting people wouldn't miss them for the world

Judith Coleman

I joined Lucy's Tuesday evening pilates class approximately 12 years ago. I was struggling with a 'tricky' sacroiliac joint caused by too much road running and had been advised by my osteopath to take up pilates. Lucy's class was recommended by a friend and I have been going ( mostly) regularly ever since.

Lucy starts by talking to you about your medical issues so she knows what to advise. The class size is such that she can oversee us all and offer encouragement, corrections and advice with each section. My back problem has resolved but I still feel the benefit of the class each week to keep my 71 year old self feeling supple. At the start of the hour I cannot touch my toes; at the end of the hour I can put my hands flat on the floor.

Whilst I was recovering from a dislocated shoulder Lucy was able to offer me some alternative options for some of our routines. This was great because it gave me confidence to keep on exercising through what was a very painful recovery.

I like the fact that Lucy runs other similar classes at different times during the week so in theory I don't have to miss a weekly session! She also runs online classes and during Covid this meant that we could keep up with our exercise regime from home. Her prices are very competitive and I appreciate that you can pay each week rather than commit to a course paying upfront for, say, 6 weeks at a time.

One of the unexpected benefits of going to Pilates.....apart from the pleasure of making new friends....is how well I sleep at night after a class.

Excellent - 5

I have been part of Lucy’s classes for a number of years now (spin and fitness) and have always found her to be a clear, patient, effective and professional teacher who leads by example and constantly brings new learning and methods to her classes to help all.  Her clear aim is to make fitness attainable for every level to enable individuals to move easily, freely and with strength in order to live well and move towards whatever drives you.

More recently I have take part in the zoom classes and couldn’t recommend them highly enough.  Joining live on the early mornings can be difficult but you don’t regret it.  Classes leave you feeling energised, positive, focussed and fit ready with a really good start to the day.  With the added bonus that the workout is done and the day is yours.  Her classes cover mobility, strength, fitness, core work, full body workouts and a Friday full stretch out treat.  Not to be missed and all in the convenience of your own space.  Join Lucy, you won’t regret it and your body will thank you.  I can very smugly touch my toes and move my hips in ways I couldn’t even in my teens.

I started attending Lucy's classes as part of my recovery after a brain aneurysm. My balance strength and coordination improved dramatically, so much so that within 2 years I was able to fulfill a goal of running again and with Lucy's help, completed a 10k race! I couldn't even run 20 yards before we started!!

Wendy Sears

I generally attend Lucy's classes once a week. My initial motivation was that I wanted to continue my walking and running, whilst minimising the risk of injury.

The classes have really improved my core strength and flexibility. The movements are gentle, but challenging...but the challenge is never beyond what is safe for me, and Lucy always suggests a modified version of an exercise to meet my specific needs, whilst ensuring that I use the correct techniques to engage specific muscles to the maximum.

It's an absolutely brilliant class in a relaxed atmosphere. No matter your age or your current level of fitness, this is something you just have to try!

What can I say.... I love Teaching!

I have met some of the BEST people in the last 17 years of teaching. I really am blessed to be able to wake up everyday and do what I love.

I thoroughly enjoy watching how, over the weeks, strength and confidence is developed in everyone who attends class.

Whether you are a beginner or advanced, there is always something more you can learn about your body and I'm so great full I get to go through it with you.
